Memory Cards
A memory card offers an easy, fast and reliable way for storing and transferring digital files. It works like a portable hard disk drive but comes with some superior advantages. Memory cards can be found in different storage capacity and transfer speeds. Today, 256 mb memory card, 512 mb memory card, 1gb Memory Card and other higher?capacity memory cards are available in the market.
Memory cards started gaining popularity in the beginning of 2000, as the usage of memory cards expanded to consumer electronic products like camcorders, mobile phones, etc. This created the need for much smaller memory cards. The first small form factor was the MMC standard followed by the SD Card and the Memory Stick. This was the time when memory cards were used in cameras as Camera Cards. The main card used at that time as a Camera Card was SD card.
Since the usage of memory cards in mobile phones become more common, new smaller versions of memory cards were introduced, namely MMCmobile card and mini-SD card. Today very Cheap MMC Mobile cards and Cheap Mini-SD Cards are being manufactured by a lot of companies.
In the last few years, the driving force in the memory card industry shifted to ultra small memory cards which resulted in development of Micro-SD Card. New MMC Plus Card was also developed with a much faster data transfer rate as compared to standard MMC card. The latest development in the memory card industry is the development of the Memory Stick Micro M2. Today, Sony and Sandsik Memory Stick Micro M2 are the most popular memory sticks.
During the above period, some other memory card standards were also introduced, like the USB Flash Pen Drives as a replacement for the floppy disk. Some memory cards have also been introduced exclusively to be used by game consoles.
